Dear Parents,

Welcome to Pfeiffer Middle School! I am very excited to have your child in Language Arts. I look forward to interacting with your child in reading and writing. I love reading and writing, and I hope that your child will really share that love for literature with me this year. In class, we will be reading and writing every day. It is really important that your child brings a self-selected novel to class. I also encourage you to read with your child every night.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. This is my twelfth year teaching. I have my Masters in Reading and an Elementary Education degree from Bowling Green State University. I enjoy my family, reading, walking, any sport, hockey, puppetry, and Perry students.

If you would like to volunteer or help in anyway, please let me know. In addition, if you have any concerns or questions this year, please feel free to call me at school, email me at school, or send me a letter. Also, on the Pfeiffer website, I have a web page for my class. Please check it weekly for homework and classroom information. During the school year, the school publishes a newsletter that is on the school's website. I will also send home letters to you about specific activities and information in Language Arts class. In the meantime, to better meet your child's learning needs and goals, please complete and return the educational goals sheet attached. I feel this and further assessments that I use will enable me to help your child achieve in Language Arts class. I think if we all have high goals and expectations, we will all do our best this year!

This year we will be collecting student work in a reading and writing portfolio. We will use the portfolio to save, organize, reflect, and review standards to assess student learning and set goals for future learning.

Some of the work collected will have traditional grading and some will be evaluated by rubrics, checklists, self reflections, peer reflections, and goal setting. The portfolio will show student growth and provide evidence for learning the sixth grade reading and writing standards.

Portfolio work samples will be collected every week and maintained in the classroom. I will send home the portfolio binders every grading period for you to see and comment on your student's progress. If you would like to see the portfolio sooner, we can set up a student-led conference. Through portfolio assessment, we all can get a better idea of how much your child is learning and evidence for achieving, meeting, or still working on the standards.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or visit anytime.

Sincerely,

Julie Wells

Classroom Expectations:

·         In Language Arts class you will always need: a novel, a pencil, your literature book, a Language Arts folder, your handbook, loose leaf notebook paper, and homework. You will not be able to go back to your locker to retrieve any missing items so be prepared and organized.

·         In Language Arts class you will have homework every day. Reading at night is always homework. Also, reading, writing, and spelling assignments are given throughout the week. If you choose not to complete your homework, you will be fined two bonus bucks and have to sign a book. If you complete your homework, you will receive bonus bucks. If you repetitively miss homework, notes will be sent home to be signed by your parents. After 5 homework misses, a homework detention will be assigned. Please make homework a priority.

·         In Language Arts class a student will fill out an absent slip for students who are absent. If you are absent, please pick up your make-up work in the absent tray. If you are absent and have any questions, please remember to ask the teacher!

·         In Language Arts class please follow all school rules that are listed in the handbook. Failure to follow the rules will result in loss of behavior bucks, notes home, phone calls home, or be referred to the assistant principal for further disciplinary action.

·         In Language Arts class we will be kind and respectful to all! Positive attitudes are a must. Students will be rewarded for positive behaviors. Our goal should always be to help each other.

·         In Language Arts class we will read novels for entertainment. During silent reading time we will read and not disrupt others who are reading.

·         In Language Arts class we will smile and have a great year.
