1.  HOMEWORK

Every night (yes, even on Fridays J), I will assign homework.  The homework which I assign should take no more than 20 minutes per subject to complete.   All homework is due the following class day without exception.  I believe that homework is a chance to practice and to find out if the material is properly understood.  I expect errors on homework since the skills and content are still being learned.  For this reason, I do not take grades on regular homework assignments.  Rather I check to see that it is completed and brought to class on time.  Homework is a learning experience, so errors on homework should not be a cause for alarm as long as the mistakes are corrected during class when we go over the assignment.  Homework that is incomplete or not brought to class when it is due will warrant a classroom “fine” which will be paid with Champion Choice Checks which are earned in my classroom.

2.  STUDENT PLANNERS

Your child has received a student planner in which to write homework assignments each day.  During every class, I will set aside time for the students to write assignments and any reminders in their planners.  The planners are to be taken home and returned to school each day.  This will help the students stay organized and will provide an easy way for you to stay informed about the daily work your child is being assigned.  Ask your child to see his/her planner on a regular basis.

3.  GRADES

I use the official grading scale set forth by the school board.  Please note that the grade scale is different than the one that was used in the elementary grades. Please see the grade scale below.  At Pfeiffer, our gradebooks are kept electronically and are available for you to view your child’s grades on the internet.  I encourage you to use Pinnacle Parent Viewer frequently to see a report of all of your child’s grades throughout the grading period.  This will prevent any “surprises” at interim time or when report cards are issued.  In the near future, our district technology office will be mailing a letter to you with your unique password so that you can log onto the Pinnacle Parent Viewer from any computer with internet access.

4. BOOKS

All of the school books issued to your child must be covered at all times.  Please do NOT tape the book cover to the book, and do NOT use self-adhesive book covers.  The adhesive book covers damage the texts even though the companies which make the covers claim that they do not!  Over the years, I have found that the most durable and practical book covers are those made from paper grocery bags.  I will have your child thoroughly examine the math book I issue and complete a book condition report.  Fines will be levied at the end of the year for any damage to a book that was not reported by your child when it was issued.   Please remind your child to treat the school books with care to avoid fines!  In science class, we will use a variety of texts throughout the year.  There is one set of textbooks per classroom.  For this reason, your child will not be issued a science textbook to bring home.  You can expect your child to bring home notes and copies of articles to use in place of a textbook.

5.  CLASSROOM RULES

In order to provide a safe, productive learning environment, all students in my class are expected to follow five rules.  Further, I require my students to comply with all policies set forth in the Student Handbook.  My classroom rules are as follows:

* Arrive to class on time with all required materials.

* Follow directives the first time they are given.

* Prevent no one from learning.

* Respect the rights and feelings of others.

* Have a positive attitude, believe in yourself, and use good manners.

6.  REWARDS and CONSEQUENCES

I have discussed the importance of appropriate behavior with the students.  To reinforce good behavioral choices, I will be using a classroom reward system.  Your child will earn a Champion Choice Check during class if she/he follows my classroom rules.  Champion Choice Checks will also be awarded for acts of exemplary citizenship or outstanding behavior.  Champion Choice Checks can be used to purchase a variety of privileges and rewards in my classroom.  Throughout the year, please encourage your child to suggest additional privileges and rewards that are of interest to him/her.  There are some behaviors which carry with them “fines”.  Such behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following:  incomplete homework, lack of required materials, disobedience, disrespect, not cleaning up one’s work area, running in the halls or classroom, lying and cheating.  Fines will be paid in Champion Choice Checks.  Any student who goes into debt will be assigned a before or after school detention which will erase the debt.  I will contact you by phone or letter if your child’s behavior hinders the learning process or if misconduct occurs an inordinate amount of time.  If a student engages in a behavior which might cause injury or acts with gross disrespect to an adult, she/he will be referred to the assistant principal for further disciplinary action.

7.  ABSENCES

Regular attendance at school is vital for success.  However, we all have times when we are ill or have family situations which require us to miss school.  When your child is absent, I ask that you follow our school policies:  Call the office to report the absence and send a note or doctor’s excuse with your child to explain the absence on the day she/he returns to school.  In addition, please make every effort to obtain missed work for each day of absence.  I post my homework assignments daily on my webpage.  You might wish to call the office and arrange to pick up your child’s assignments, or you may wish to have your child’s sibling or friend bring books/assignments home.  Although this might not make it possible to have the missed work completed when your child returns to school, she/he will at least know what needs to be made up.  Please encourage your child to speak with me upon returning to school to discuss missed work and to arrange a time to make-up work or get additional help from me.  If your child is absent the day of a test or quiz but was present the previous day, your child will be required to take the test or quiz the day he/she returns to class.

8. EXTRA HELP

I want your child to be successful and confident in my classes.  However from time to time, confusion and frustration may develop.  Please encourage your child to ask questions and to seek my help during class.  I will gladly stay after school or meet with your child during lunch or study hall to provide additional help if needed.  Remind your child to take advantage of other sources of help, such as the peer tutoring program which I have going in my classroom.

9. MRS. LEDOUX’S WEBPAGE

Please visit my webpage frequently for current information, homework assignments, class notes and much more!  Simply go to www. pfeiffermath.org  and point to 6th grade on the menu bar.  A list of teachers will appear.  Click on Mrs. Ledoux.  You can also access my webpage from the Pfeiffer homepage under the link to teacher webpages.  You and your child will be able to view daily class notes, homework assignments and much more.  I have tried to make my webpage very functional for students and parents.  If there is something you would like to see on my webpage that isn’t already there, please let me know so that I can tailor my webpage to better meet your needs.

10. CONTACTING MRS. LEDOUX

If at any time you have questions or concerns, I want you to contact me.  Email is the fastest way to get in touch with me.  However, you may call me at school or at home, send a note with your child or drop by to see me in person.  I will respond to you the same day that I receive your message.  My home phone number is (330) 479-1219.  While I welcome your phone calls at home, I do ask that you call before 10:00 p.m.  As a courtesy, I request that you address any questions or concerns about my class or about your child’s performance in my class directly to me.  If I am unable to answer your questions or to resolve the matter to your satisfaction, then I would invite you to contact our principal or assistant principal.

11. STUDENT TEACHER

I am fortunate to have Ms. Pariano, a student-teacher from Ohio University, working with me this year in science class.  Ms. Pariano will be with us from the first day of school until Thanksgiving.  Expect to hear your child talking about this terrific student-teacher in the days and weeks ahead.

This is going to be a fabulous year!  I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks.  Please remember that I am here to help your child get the best education possible.  Open and honest communication between you and I will help the year to go smoothly for all of us.  I look forward to serving your child throughout the school year.  Thank you in advance for your interest, involvement, cooperation and support.
