December 2009

On behalf of all of the teachers on Community 6-2, I would like to thank all of the families who contributed to the Student Advisory Council’s Annual Food Drive. It was a huge success! I am very proud of the Community 6-2 students. Many area families will benefit from the generosity of our students and their families. The support of the Community 6-2 families is AWSOME!!

“Will it sink or will it float?”  That is the question!!  In December, we are studying the property of density.  We will experiment with the idea of sinking and floating.  We will also be trying to determine whether substances that are the same size have the same mass.  This is a very difficult concept for 6th graders, but we will have many hands-on experiences to help the students visualize the idea of density.

Happy Holidays!!

November 2009

Wow! The first nine weeks flew by. As we begin the second nine weeks, we are concluding our study of the Scientific Method in science class. Students have learned about the process of experimentation and problem solving. We have been writing hypotheses and conducting experiments that demonstrate the use of the Scientific Method as we tackled a great deal of new vocabulary associated with this unit.

Our next unit will have our 6.2 scientists studying measurement. The students are getting the opportunity to explore and experiment with many different types of measurement, as we are measuring mass, length, volume, density, pH, and temperature. As you are fixing holiday meals and treats, please encourage your child to help you measure the different ingredients to continue their practice and make those important real world connections!

Now that our Community 6-2 students have transitioned to the style of learning here at Pfeiffer Middle School, we are going to pick up the pace a bit. We will have more homework in science and more frequent quizzes. Please assist your sixth grader in their preparation for quizzes as they are still learning study techniques. Any pointers that you can provide for your child will help them in developing their own good study habits.

I know that the transition to middle school has also been difficult for some of the parents. As the first nine weeks has ended and you are reading your child’s report card with them, you may feel very distanced from what your child is doing here at school. I offer this suggestion to help you: please make use of my website and email. On my website you can get information about what is going on in your child’s science class. I post the homework for the entire week on Mondays, any upcoming tests/quizzes and what should be studied about a week in advance, and the retake information as well. You can access my website from the Pfeiffer page or by typing the following address into your tool bar http://www.perrynet.sparcc.org/~evanss/

I would also like to remind you that parent teacher conferences are November 11th from 5-8pm and November 12th from 8am-11am, 12pm-3pm, and 5pm-8pm.

If you have any questions or concerns for me please feel free to email me at evanss@perry1.sparcc.org

I hope to see you at conferences!

September/October 2009

In science classes, we spent the first month of school learning about what makes someone a scientist. The community 6-2 students found out that you don’t have to be an old man with crazy hair like Albert Einstein to be scientists. Kids are scientists too. We also researched famous scientists to discover who they are, where they came from, and what they did. Now that we have learned about some famous scientists, we are going to get down to the business of being scientists ourselves. During the coming units we will be studying and applying the skills scientists use.

In October, we will continue working with observation and inference. These are two skills that students struggle with, so please try to work on this at home. We will finish up October by learning the scientific method and increasing our measurement skills.

August 2009

Welcome to Community 6-2 and welcome to Mrs. Evans’ Science Class!!  We are going to have a great year!!  Our sixth graders will learn how to think and act like scientists while learning about various areas of science including scientific processes and skills, life science, and physical science.  I cannot wait to meet all of our parents at Open House on Tuesday, September 1 from 6-7pm.

Please use my website (http://perrynet.sparcc.org/~evanss/ ) to check for homework assignments, to prepare for upcoming quizzes/tests, and to keep updated on the latest class news. Please feel free to email me anytime with questions or concerns.

It is going to be a great year!!!!
